If you've used both Panorama and Tabpose, the differences are obvious. Some early reports have compared Tabpose to Firefox 4's new Panorama tab organizer, but Firefox's version is considerably more sophisticated, with extra features like drag-and-drop organization and the ability to group tabs and switch between groups. Tabpose is similar to Mac OS X's Expose it allows you to visually pull back and see all your tabs as thumbnails and quickly switch between them. The Mac version of the browser is also experimenting with something Google calls "Tab Overview" or Tabpose. Hardware acceleration isn't the only new trick up Chrome's sleeve. Grab the latest developer build of Chrome 7 and launch it from the command line with the new -enable-accelerated-compositing flag.Īs with Firefox, the hardware acceleration features in Chrome are only available in the Windows version. Thus far Google has not confirmed any release dates for Chrome 6, nor when Chrome 7 will move to beta status.īut If you'd like to test the early builds of Chrome with hardware acceleration, you can do so now. Chrome 5 is currently the shipping version and Chrome 6-which features a considerably revamped interface-is currently in the beta channel. Of course it may be some time before any of these features make it to the stable release of Chrome. Chrome's tightly sandboxed rendering model-which prevents web pages from interacting directly with the OS-means that hardware acceleration is a little more difficult for Google than it is for IE or Firefox. Both of those browsers should be released before the end of this year.Ĭhrome 7, which is currently available in developer build form, is the latest browser to take advantage of hardware acceleration. Microsoft has been trumpeting IE9's accelerated capabilities since the first developer preview was released, and Firefox 4 will also take advantage of the new technology. Today's faster graphics cards have created a new playing field for hardware acceleration. It has the benefit of freeing up the PC's main processor and speeding up page load times. Hardware acceleration allows the browser to offload intensive tasks like image scaling, rendering complex text or displaying scripted animations to your PC's graphics card. Time will tell if these new features help.Ĭhrome users on Windows PCs, Chromebooks, Macs and MacBooks will be able to use these features, but there’s no news about when or if these features will come to Andoid and iOS.Google's Chrome web browser will soon gain hardware-accelerated graphics-the latest trend for web browsers that has already shown up in early builds of Internet Explorer 9 and Firefox 4. Microsoft’s Edge browser is slowly but surely gaining market share thanks to its switch to the same Chromium engine that Chrome uses, which makes switching to the browser a lot easier, and the highly-publicized inclusion of the ChatGPT AI chatbot.Ĭhrome’s propensity for hogging RAM has also started to affect its reputation, so Google is right to address it. However, while Chrome remains the most-used browser, Google still needs to be careful. Due to it being so dominant in the web browser market, there’s always the worry that Google could get complacent, and not feel to concerned about addressing people’s complaints with Chrome. We’re always pleased to see Google improve Chrome. If you can’t find the new features, type the following into the address bar of Chrome, and make sure they are set to “Enabled”: chrome://flags/#high-efficiency-mode-available If you’re on a desktop PC, the Energy Saver feature will be hidden. Once you’ve updated to Chrome 110, you should be able to see them in the ‘Performance’ tab in Chrome’s settings. The good news is that you can select to have Energy Saver only turn on when your battery is lower than 20%, or only when the laptop is unplugged. Doing so could help prolong the battery life of the laptop or Chromebook you’re using Chrome on.īecause this feature can have a big impact on the overall quality of your web browsing experience, you won’t want this on all the time (or at all, if you’re using a desktop PC). This limits background activity and reduces visual effects, such as smooth scrolling or website animations, and can also reduce video frame rates. Another feature, called Energy Saver, is also included.
